Inventors and Inventions

In our new unit, we are looking at how inventions are created.  We are learning that many inventions were created to solve a problem that the inventor noticed in his or her own daily life.  Some inventions were inspired by things that the the inventor saw in nature.  Some inventions are improvements on things that already exist.  You may wish to explore this idea more with your student.  Shows like Shark Tank or The Toy Box can show the process in a fun format and you may wish to preview online episodes and then share with your student, if you feel it is appropriate.  Footage of the Wright Brothers first flight is also available on line and we have also looked at how solar collectors are changing.  Encourage your student to see if there is a problem he or she could solve through invention!
